Mask made of wool, hemp, hand-spun alpaca, sheep fleece, cow rib and handmade glass eyes. 100% hand-woven in high-warp loom.
Measurements: 224 x 62 x 32 cm.
The disproportionate size, the deformed expression, the use of recycled material: wool knob from an old mattress, hemp from a carpet, hand-spun alpaca hair, sheep fleece on the head, cow rib as an amulet and handmade glass eyes give this mask a disturbing and inquiring dimension.
It is woven in taffeta, as possibly our ancestors did, in a way that makes the author disappear and gives life to the sculpture, moving us to another reality that escapes our senses, but that does not leave us indifferent, reflecting on what masks represent in past and present cultures around the world: in Galicia the “cigarrones”, in Japan the masks of the Jōmon period to cover the deceased and ward off evil spirits and in Mato Grosso the Yakuikatus (or Yakuikatusu) that are made with natural materials and are part of ceremonies that seek to transmit spiritual and cultural elements of the Paiter Suruí as other masks in the Xingú among others.
The essence of the work lies in its spiritual plane. It is called Wii (from wifi) because it is the connection with the intangible, the invisible, the immaterial, and it is clothed in a magical power, bringing together a compendium of archetypal emotions: fear, joy, anger, disappointment, which it supports by creating a catharsis alien to any canon of beauty.
Process responsible
At Belategui Regueiro we work with very short series -and often unique pieces- because we believe in responsible production. This allows us to choose and use only the necessary materials, without accumulating large quantities or generating unnecessary stock. This way we avoid waste and ensure that each piece is woven with intention, time and care. If a piece appears to be out of stock, we can weave it especially for you. We prefer to create on demand rather than overproduce: it’s our way of respecting resources, process and your choice.
Environmental note
Made following a production cycle of low environmental impact because we have woven it by hand in one of the handmade high-warp looms that we have in our workshop in Cambre (A Coruña). The only electricity we have consumed in its creation process has been the one needed to illuminate the workshop.
Repair and service life.
If your part needs a small adjustment or repair over time, you can write to us. We prefer to accompany you throughout its life than to replace it with another one.
