This rug is woven with Galician sheep wool and goes beyond its decorative functionality. The intention behind this piece is to pay homage to nature, tradition and rural resilience. Each of its components, from the wool to the manual manufacturing process, is loaded with symbolism and meaning.

The use of wool from the “ovella galega” breed, which is a by-product considered livestock waste, is very intentional. The transformation process of this wool follows ethical and sustainable practices in all its stages: it was carefully sheared with respect to the integrity of animal welfare standards, it was washed in one of the only three authorized laundries in Spain and has the corresponding certificate certifying that it complies with current regulations.

It was hand-spun with the intention of maintaining a thick, irregular and slightly twisted texture, seeking to respect the naturalness of the material with the colors of the sheep’s hair: undyed.

The type of weaving to be used had to be in line with all the previous processes in order to maximize the characteristics of the wool and the yarn, and it was decided to weave it on a high-warp loom that only requires a structure to tension the warp and the work of the hands that separate the threads one by one to make way for the weft, thicker than usual, which is also combed with the hands to achieve a very thick weave with the intention of creating a pleasant surface that encourages walking, sitting or lying on it, and that, when looking at it, evokes images of clouds in the sky.

The back of this rug is carefully lined with a cotton canvas in the same colors as the wool, which not only provides an impeccable finish, but also fulfills a practical function: this lining acts as a protection and packaging system for the rug, adding handles that facilitate its transportation. In this way, the piece is not only decorative and functional in its daily use, but was also designed to be practical and portable, preserving its integrity during transportation.

Process responsible

At Belategui Regueiro we work with very short series -and often unique pieces- because we believe in responsible production. This allows us to choose and use only the necessary materials, without accumulating large quantities or generating unnecessary stock. This way we avoid waste and ensure that each piece is woven with intention, time and care. If a piece appears to be out of stock, we can weave it especially for you. We prefer to create on demand rather than overproduce: it’s our way of respecting resources, process and your choice.

Environmental note

Made following a production cycle of low environmental impact because we have woven it by hand in one of the handmade high-warp looms that we have in our workshop in Cambre (A Coruña). The only electricity we have consumed in its creation process has been the one needed to illuminate the workshop.
