For this scarf to have the look you see in the picture we have worked with two traditional techniques: weaving and handmade dyeing. The first is the weaving: from linen fiber, and after making all the calculations to be done, cutting the threads (ten for each cm width), placing them on the loom, threading them in order on the heddles and the comb and making the heddle and treadle connections, we have woven the fabric in ecru color. We have finished the joints, twisted and tied the bangs, washed by hand and dried in the drying line.
The second is the dyeing: in the washing and dyeing area of our workshop we have prepared the pots to put on the fire, controlled the temperatures, times and mixtures (we have used natural indigo extracted from the indigofera tinctorum plant). We previously prepare the woven linen for dyeing, applying the shibori, which is an ancient dyeing technique, born in Japan in the seventh century, which means to tighten, tie, twist, it is to reserve certain areas of the fabric to prevent them from being dyed and dip it in that bath until reaching the tone we are looking for. Once this process is finished, we wash the piece by hand until the wash water comes out clean, a sign that it will not fade or stain our skin or clothes.
The result is this: a beautiful scarf with blues of different intensities between which white windows open to peek through.
All this on a fabric, linen, that with the passage of time, use and washing will age like fine wines, improving.
And with a thickness and size that allows you to wear it in winter, wrapped tightly around your neck, and in summer as a light shawl that leaves a trail behind you.
Process responsible
At Belategui Regueiro we work with very short series -and often unique pieces- because we believe in responsible production. This allows us to choose and use only the necessary materials, without accumulating large quantities or generating unnecessary stock. This way we avoid waste and ensure that each piece is woven with intention, time and care. If a piece appears to be out of stock, we can weave it especially for you. We prefer to create on demand rather than overproduce: it’s our way of respecting resources, process and your choice.
Care and recommendations
Wash your pieces by hand with neutral soap, without twisting and letting them dry in the shade. For ironing, in the case of linen, it is best to iron it when it is not yet completely dry.
Maintenance
Always store your pieces stretched or folded gently, avoiding prolonged weight on hangers so that they do not become deformed. Airing them from time to time – without exposing them to direct sunlight – helps to keep their fibers in good condition.
We weave with noble and sensitive materials: a simple and regular care will ensure that each piece will accompany you for many years.
Environmental note
Made following a production cycle of low environmental impact because we have woven it by hand in one of the artisan looms that we have in our workshop in Cambre (A Coruña). We have finished the fringe thread by thread with a needle, we have washed it by hand with neutral soap, air dried it and the only electricity we have consumed in its creation process has been the one necessary to illuminate the workshop and for the final ironing.
As the soap we use in the washing process is of vegetable origin, we use the water left over from this process to control aphids on the plants in our vegetable garden. A simple way to close the cycle and reduce waste.
Repair and service life.
If your part needs a small adjustment or repair over time, you can write to us. We prefer to accompany you throughout its life than to replace it with another one.
